It’s never good when you are hoping for a cover. They even said they were going to play some old school rock and roll for their closer, which left me hoping for a cover song. They were much older and had a more old school sound, but still weren’t all that interesting to me. The next opener was Like An Army, which was band that apparently formed out of the ashes of other local St. Their opener was pretty heavy, but the remaining five or six songs all had a weird poppy/reggage influence. The first band, Spacetrain, was a three piece of youngsters with too much energy and an unclear direction. Thankfully, the two openers for STP ended up playing fairly short sets.

Something had delayed the start of the show to 8:00.
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS SINGER CUTS SELF FULL
We arrived at the venue at 7:30, a full half hour after the show was scheduled to start, and no bands had taken the stage. Our attempt to miss an opening band failed. By the time Fuel hit the stage, the crowd was restless and impatient… And the enthusiasm level was lower than it would have been had Fuel taken the stage a band or two earlier. They were all quite different from eachother aside from the common thread of being terrble. While only one opening band was listed on the tickets, two were listed on the website, but THREE were at the actual show. Best case of that is the Fuel show I caught in 2012. Opening bands are almost always a buzzkill, and having multiple opening bands can severely dampen a crowd’s enjoyment of a show.

Two opening bands had been announced, so my girlfriend and I made it a point to leave late to avoid at least one of them. My first chance to see them live was Decemeat a small club called Pop’s in Sauget, IL, just east of St. The new material is solid, but how would the band sound with the classics? How would Chester sound singing the classics? I had kept an open mind about this lineup, waiting to make my final judgment on them after seeing them live. Overall, it’s a good sign of things to come from this new version of STP. “Cry Cry” picks things up a bit with a new twist to the STP sound, while “Tomorrow,” another mid-tempo song, closes the album out in a strong way. “Same On The Inside” is a mid-tempoish number, and to me, the weakest song on the EP. The second single, “Black Heart,” was catchy in a way somewhat similar to “Hickory Dichotomy” from STP’s most recent release, 2010’s self-titled album. In October, STP w/ Chester put out an EP called High Rise, featuring “Out Of Time” and four other new songs. I thought it would be equally risky with Chester. But even with some solid songs, I couldn’t get into “Fuel” without Brett’s voice. They put out a decent album with a new singer after the departure of Brett Scallions. Bon Scott and David Lee Roth were to AC/DC what Scott Weiland was to STP… So could they pull it off with another singer?įuel tried in 2007 and the answer was no. Sure, AC/DC and Van Halen pulled it off (for the most part), though even today much debate takes place, pitting one singer’s era against the other’s. Singer changes are tough to get away with. I only had a few minutes to take in that information before I was presented with a brand new song, “Out Of Time.” Upon first listen, it was so weird to hear STP with Chester that I didn’t know what to think. When this was originally announced, my response was pretty much on par with everyone else’s… That Scott was somewhat coherent, certainly not the worst that he’s ever been… But some of the singing was certainly questionable, and many of the songs were played at such a slow tempo that it took me out of the show.Ģ013 presents us with a third version of the band, featuring Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington. The band turned me into a fan that cold October night, even with a mere 12 song setlist opening for Aerosmith. He shows up late (or not at all) for shows, and then if he does, you don’t know which Scott you’re goign to get… The coherent, semi-capable Scott, or the… Under the influence of something and completely incapable Scott. He’s been unreliable, unwilling to work, unwilling to take chances, and all together unavailable.

I can certainly understand the band firing him. “There is no Stone Temple Pilots without Scott Weiland.” Back in February 2013 when Stone Temple Pilots ‘officially’ fired Scott Weiland, my response was pretty much on par with everyone else’s…
